What is the Betfair Exchange?
Betfair Exchange is the world's largest sports betting exchange, allowing you to bet directly with other bettors, giving you more ways to bet and more opportunities to win.
What do the blue and pink boxes mean?
Blue boxes represent bets on an outcome. Pink boxes represent bets on an outcome.
What does a back bet and a lay bet mean?
Every bet on the Betfair Exchange has two sides; someone backing an outcome (a back bet on a win, more goals, fewer corners, etc) and someone on the other side laying that same outcome (any outcome but a win, fewer goals, more corners, etc). This is not normally offered by other bookmakers. However, at Betfair, customers can back or lay odds created by other customers like you, which is why you will almost always find fairer odds.
Why are quotes always changing?
The Exchange is dynamic, imagine a stock exchange where at all times there are customers wanting to buy or sell quotes, it is a marketplace, it changes as bets are matched and other bettors enter the market.
Why can't I place bets below R$5?
Given the large number of transactions that pass through the Betfair Exchange, the minimum bet of R$5 is imposed to ensure good liquidity for all users.
How do I simplify the page?
Use the "Settings" menu in the top right corner. There, you can uncheck any boxes you don't consider relevant to remove them from the screen.
On mobile device, I only see blue boxes and not the pink ones?
You probably clicked to view only the odds for. Go to the settings and click on the "odds against" box.
What do the colorless boxes mean?
On the Exchange, we only highlight the best odds available for back and lay betting. The uncolored boxes indicate the next odds that will become available once the current total available amount is exhausted.
Why do you get better quotes and better values on Exchange?
Traditional bookmakers generally aim to incorporate margin into the prices they offer. Betfair is a customer-to-customer betting exchange. As such, it eliminates the need for a bookmaker, often resulting in fairer and better-value prices.
How do I correspond with another person?
You are matched with someone else by either accepting the price of a back or lay bet that is already available, so it happens instantly, or by raising the offer of a back or lay bet to be matched with someone else. You can check the status of your bets in the 'open bets' tab on the right.
How does Betfair make money if I'm not betting against them?
Betfair charges customers commission via a small percentage of the profit made on a given market.
Why is there more than one blue and pink box for each selection (market breakdown question and could be better under liquidity)
On the Exchange, we only highlight the best odds available for back and lay betting. The uncolored boxes indicate the next available back or lay odds.
Liquidity
Why can I only apply a certain amount?
Bets are available subject to demand and occasionally there may only be a limited amount of money available at a given price. Exchange markets tend to be more liquid (meaning there are bets/prices available) when they are close to the start time of the event. If you want to place a bet on an illiquid market and don’t want to wait, then you can get fixed odds at Betfair Sportsbook.
Why is there no money in this market?
Bets are placed on demand, so if you want to back something, there needs to be enough demand from lay bettors to match your bet. If there are no prices/odds available, it means there is not enough demand for that market. Exchange markets tend to be more liquid (meaning they have bets/prices available) when they are close to the start time of the event. If you want to place a bet on an illiquid market and don’t want to wait, then you can get fixed odds on Betfair Sportsbook.
What happens when my bet is not matched? How and when should I get matches and where can I see my bet?
Your bet will remain on offer until someone accepts the offered price. If your bet is not matched, it will be cancelled once the events start and the money will be returned to your account. Exchange markets tend to be more liquid and active closer to the start time of the event. You can see if your bet has been matched in the ‘open bets’ tab on the right.
What alternatives do I have when I want to bet on markets that are not available on the Betfair Exchange?
Why can't I place an each-way bet?
Each-way betting is available on select races, in the tabs on the left. Would you like to try our Betfair Sports section of the site, where you can place each-way bets in the same way as traditional bookmakers?
How do I place multiple bets?
Unfortunately, traditional multiples are not available on the Betfair Exchange, only on Betfair Sports.
